Association between epigenetic modification and periodontal diseases

Abstract:

Periodontitis is a multifactorial infection characterized by inflammation and destruction of tooth supporting tissues, the main cause of tooth lost. The pathogenesis is complex. Not only the periodontal pathogens and its metabolites damage the tooth supporting tissues directly, but also trigger immune response. Cytokines are producted during the immune response. In recent years, some researches demonstrated that the expressing of cytokines gene was regulated by epigenetic modification. Owing to cytokines, epigenetic modification has something to do with the periodontitis. In this review, the epigenetic modification involved in periodontitis and research progress were discussed.
