Abstract: Diabetes mellitus considerably affects the occurrence, development and prognosis of apical periodontitis. Recently, numerous studies have been conducted to determine the underlying mechanism. In this paper, the pathogenesis and the clinical management of apical periodontitis in diabetic patients are reviewed.

Key words: diabetes mellitus, apical periodontitis, clinical management
