Mechanism of vertical food impaction

Abstract: Vertical food impaction, defined as the forceful wedging of food into the interproximal space by chewing pressure, leads to mechanical stimulation and bacterial colonization, results in discomfort in food impaction areas, even caries and periodontal diseases. Food impaction channel between adjacent teeth during function is the key point in vertical food impaction. Focusing on physiological proximal contacts, we postulated the mechanism of vertical food impaction.
