    Abstract ( 980 )   HTML ( 1 )   PDF(pc) (171KB) ( 478 )   Save

Alveolar cleft is a common congenital developmental defect accompanied with cleft lip and palate. In order to eliminate oronasal fistula, improve the periodontal condition of the teeth adjacent to the cleft and provide bone support during the period of teeth eruption, secondary bone grafting is needed as an essential procedure for alveolar cleft patients. Fresh autogenous bone from appropriate sites(i.e. iliac crest) is the“gold standard”for alveolar cleft osteoplasty, however it is often related to the disadvantages such as limited availability, donor site morbidity, repeated operations due to the absorption of the grafted bone and bone growth of the patients, all of these impose a heavy burden for the patients. To overcome these limitations, tissue engineering bone has provided predictable results with minimal donor-site morbidity. Here we review the three prerequisites consist of cell, scaffold, signaling molecular for tissue engineering and illustrate the relationship between tissue engineering bone and orthodontics for alveolar cleft.

Numb is a factor of cell fate determinant, which, by asymmetrically partitioning at mitosis, controls cell fate choices by antagonising the activity of the plasma membrance receptor of the Notch family. Numb has recently been shown to help activate the tumor suppressor protein p53. Loss of numb would result, therefore, in both the activation of the potential oncogene notch and the diminution of tumor suppression by p53. Here, we review the structure and function of Numb, Numb-related molecules and the relationship between Numb and tumor.

Proper buccolingual inclination of teeth is essential to esthetics, stability and occlusion in orthodontic treatment. Factors influencing torque in various orthodontic treatments are frequently discussed by clinical orthodontists. Good control of torque can get the normal buccolingual inclination and beautiful curve of the teeth. Clinically, there are many factors affecting the tooth torque control, such as labial surface shape of crown, root-tooth angle, tip and the center height of clinical crown. Besides, preset angle of brackets, adhesive height, texture of the arch wires, and so on, also have effects. In this paper, we will give a comprehensive review on the factors affecting torque expression in three aspects: Anatomical factors of the tooth, brackets and the properties of the archwire, respectively.
