Abstract:

Diabetes and its complications can greatly reduce the quality of life of patients, dry mouth and more water intake is one of the main symptoms of diabetes. Saliva decrements and salivary glands changes may be important causes of diabetic patients to drink more, but also one of the risk factors for other oral problems. Studying the effection mechanism of diabetes on salivary secretion and salivary glands will be important for preventing and curing patients’ symptoms of thirst, maintaining oral health and improving their quality of life. This article reviews the effect of diabetes on saliva secretion and salivary glands and its mechanism.

Key words: diabetes, salivary glands, saliva, saliva reduction, dry mouth
