Abstract:

Cephalometry is an important analytic measurement for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment and has gradually evolved from plane to stereoscopy with the development of three-dimensional imaging technology. In three-dimensional cephalometry, the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) craniofacial images of patients are measured and analyzed with three-dimensional analytic software. Compared with traditional two-dimensional cephalometry, three-dimensional cephalometry has overwhelming advantages on image definition and accuracy and thus has become a research focus. This review summarized the progress on three-dimensional cephalometry in five aspects: methods for identifying landmarks, landmarks, and reference planes; measurements and analyses; superimposition; advantages and research status; and future prospects.

Key words: cephalometry, three-dimensional imaging, cone beam computed tomography
