Abstract:

Chinese People’s Liberation Army, Beijing 100088, China) [Abstract] The goal of orthodontic treatment is to achieve the balance of stomatognathic system function, and to achieve the aesthetic of teeth, cranial skeletal, facial profile and optimal occlusion. Bolton reported tooth size discrepancies in 20 century, and Bolton analysis prevailed as an efficacious clinical tool for designing, appraising various relationships of upper to lower dentitions. Bolton analysis had a profound impact on diagnose of some malocclusion as well. As variable factors influence the tooth size discrepancies, the determination factor of tooth dimensions should be observed in depth.

Key words: Bolton index, orthodontics, clinical application
