Abstract:

Adaptation to low oxygen tension(hypoxia) in cells and tissues induce the transcription of a series of genes that participate in angiogenesis, iron metabolism, glucose metabolism, cell proliferation, and cell survival. Hypoxia inducible factor(HIF)-1 is one of the most important transcriptional activators that mediate these responses. Furthermore, the stability of HIF is regulated by ubiquitination. This article reviews the recent research on the ubiquitination of HIF-1α.

Key words: hypoxia inducible factor-1, ubiquitination, degradation
