Abstract: When the dental metallic materials are applied in the aqueous oral environments, the physical and chemical reaction will occur between the dental metallic materials and many physical and chemical composition of oral environment, which will result in corrosion of dental metallic materials. There are many microorganisms which can affect the corrosion behaviors of dental metallic materials in the oral environments. Microbiological influenced corrosion(MIC) of dental metallic materials occurs. Microbiological influenced corrosion is defined as the deterioration of a metal by corrosion processes that occur directly or indirectly as a result of the activity of living microorganisms. The temperature, pH value and richness of saliva will exert different influences on microbiological influenced corrosion of dental metallic materials. In addition, the difference of compositions and structures of dental metallic materials and machining processes also produce different corrosion process and results. Though microorganisms involve in the process of corrosion of dental metallic materials, they do not change the corrosion types. But microorganisms may stimulate or accelerate the corrosion process. Microbiological influenced corrosion of dental metallic materials is a comprehensive study of interdisciplinary. Materials science, corrosion science and bilogy research methods can be applied to study the mechanism of microbiological influenced corrosion of dental metallic materials.

Key words: dental metallic materials, microorganism, corrosion
