Abstract: Objective This study explores the association between objective and subjective evaluations of differenttypes of prostheses and to establish a simple and effective method to evaluate masticatory efficiency and quality of life in patients with prostheses. Methods The sample consisted of 93 patients who received removable partial dentures and fixed dentures during July 2012 to July 2013 from Hospital of Stamotology, Guangxi Medical University. Clinical data were collected by oral examination and subjective data were obtained by face-to-face interviews with index of eating difficulty(IED) and oral impact daily performance(OIDP). Masticatory efficiency test was conducted at the laboratory. All data were collected before and 3 months after restoration surgery. Data were analyzed with SPSS 16.0. Results Masticatory efficiency increased after restoration surgery. IED and OIDP scores decreased after restoration surgery. There were significant negative relationships between masticatory efficiency and IED and OIDP scores before and after restoration surgery. Masticatory efficiency increased whereas IED and OIDP scores decreased. Conclusion IED and OIDP are simple and effective methods to evaluate quality of life and masticatory efficiency in patients with prostheses.

Key words: prostheses, masticatory efficiency, index of eating difficulty, oral impact dairy performance
