Abstract:

Development and application of dental alloys is currently a focus in dentistry. Increasing knowledge about interaction of dental alloys with oral tissues has resulted in evolution of high performance dental materials to meet the various requirements of the ever-changing oral environment. The dental alloys are generally placed in the mouths of patients where they need to resist mechanical load and corrosive environment. Corrosion can lead to poor esthetics, compromise of physical properties, or deteriorated biocompatibility. Therefore, it is important to know the corrosion resistance. The main interest of the present article is to review the corrosion behavior of those dental alloys including alloys for prosthetic purposes, dental amalgam, and alloys for orthodontic applications, as reported by various research workers.

Key words: dental alloy, corrosion behavior, biocompatibility, metallic ions released
