Abstract: The cell- mediated immune(CMI)response involves a complex series of events after antigens enter the body. First, the antigen must be taken up by macrophages or/and dendritic cells and presented to T cells, which become activated as T- helper(CD4 cells) or cytotoxic T cells(CD8 cells). CD4 cells are classified into two subgroups: Th1 cells, that secrete predominantly interleukin(IL)- 2 and interferon- γ; and Th2 cells, that secrete predominantlyIL- 4, IL- 5, and IL- 10. These cytokine secretion profiles distinguish the so- called Th1 or Th2 responses to antigen stimulation. Th1 responses activate neutrophils and macrophages to a candidacidal activity, whereas Th2responses tend to inhibit a fungicidal state in Candida infection. There is general consensus that CMI is essential for the protection of mucosal tissues from Candida infection although the function of T cells in systemic candidiasisremains contentious.
