Abstract: Secondary caries denotes caries of the tooth which occurs at the margin of restorations. It is the most common and important reason for the replacement of restorations. Generally speaking, secondary caries contains two parts, an outer lesion and a wall lesion. Because no restorative materials can avoid the microleakage, lots of studies have been done on the relation between microleakage and secondary caries for a long time, which is still in debate nowadays. There is no definite conclusion about the microbiology of secondary caries and the specific etiologic bacteria until now. Plenty of subjects focus on the antibacterial properties of various materials, especially fluoride. This review included all the aspects above.

Key words: secondary caries, microleakage, Streptococcus mutans
