Abstract:

With the development of machine learning and deep learning, artificial intelligence has been increasingly applied in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment, mainly including automated analysis of two-dimensional images, three-dimensional image processing, digital dental cast analysis, treatment decision support, and prediction of facial morphology after treatment. In this review, the main application scenarios of artificial intelligence in orthodontics are summarized. Moreover, the potential value of artificial intelligence in improving image analysis efficiency, assisting diagnostic assessment, and supporting treatment planning is analyzed. The challenges for clinical translation in terms of data quality, model generalizability, interpretability, clinical workflow integration, and ethical and legal risks are discussed. This review aims to promote high-quality development of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment toward digital and intelligent transformation.

Key words: artificial intelligence, orthodontics, machine learning, deep learning, assisted diagnosis and treatment
