Abstract: Objective To establish a goat model for mandibular distraction and study the effects of collagen sponge on the early distraction osteogenesis. Methods Six goats were used in this study. Osteotomy was performed in the mandibular and then the distractor was placed. After 4 days latency, the goats were distracted with 0.5 mm twice per day for 10 days followed by a consolidation period. The distracted mandibles were harvested after 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks of consolidation and the appearance of samples, radiological changes, bone mineral density, bone mineral content and histology were examined. Results The experimental procedure has been well tolerated by all animals and the expected distraction length was successfully achieved. The early osteogenesis of the experimented is obviously better than the contrastive of the same time. Conclusion The goat is a perfect mandibular distraction model. Collagen sponge may be effective in the early osteogenesis of bone distraction and could shorten the consolidation period.
