Abstract:

Objective To investigate the accuracy and feasibility of optical coherence tomography(OCT) in detecting early artificial caries on molar occlusal surfaces. Methods 7 extracted human’s premolars were divided into two groups(a demineralization group and a de- and remineralization group) in random. Each tooth was varnished with nail oil except for a window of 3 mm×4 mm on the occlusal surface. The teeth of demineralization group and de- and remineralization group were exposed into acid and pH cycling separately to create artificial carious of varying severity. The depth of artificial carious lesions was acquired from OCT images, while the histological images were acquired at the same scanning path of OCT images. Results The depth of artificial caries of all samples except the tooth demineralized 7 days be detected by OCT showed agreement with polarized microscopy(P>0.05). Conclusion OCT is a noninvasive technology of caries detection. It can acquire images of occlusal caries and quantify lesion depth. That suggested the OCT has the potential of clinical diagnosis for the early carious lesion.
