Abstract: Index of treatment complexity, outcome and need（ICON） is an occlusal index collaborated and established by 97 orthodontists from 9 countries of Europe and America, and was formally introduced to the world in 2001. The aim of this index is to evaluate the orthodontic treatment need, complexity, degree of improvement and the acceptability of the outcome by the judgment of patients and models. ICON has been widely employed in the west in the past few years, but no correlated research could be seen in China so far. The purpose of the
present paper was to review the relative researches lately made by western scholars.
