Abstract: Obesity is a systemic disease which is a risk factor for several chronic diseases, most notably type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. The prevalence of obesity has increased substantially over the past decades. Some studies suggest that obesity is also associated with periodontal disease, particularly periodontitis. Here studies that have examined the association between obesity and periodontitis are reviewed, and the potential biological
mechanisms for the association of obesity with periodontitis are discussed.
