Abstract: Cementogenesis on a root surface previously exposed by periodontal disease is a prerequisite for periodontal regeneration. The extent of periodontal regeneration largely depends on the regenerative potential at the root
surface. The mechanism of cementogenesis and the exact locations of the cementoblasts or their precursors are still not well known until now. More and more experimental studies have focused on this field. The article reviewed the
studies on cells associated with cementum, proposed the viewpoints on the location of cementoblast- precusors and the origin of cementoblasts. In the review, an animal cementoblasts model established for the study on formation mechanism of cementum was also mentioned.
