Research progress on muscle reconstruction in palatoplasty

Abstract: Cleft palate is one of the common congenital anomalies in the craniofacial region. This anomaly affects multiple functions including food intake, speech, and hearing. Reconstruction of the palatal muscle can improve the velopharyngeal function, speech, and hearing. At present, most surgeons recognize velar muscle reconstruction as an indispensable step in palatoplasty. However, the degree of palatal muscle dissection, as well as the methods of palatal muscle reconstruction and their relationship with velopharyngeal function, speech, and hearing, all remain unclear. In this paper, present a comprehensive review of the above issues.
