Abstract:

Taking impressions is the first step and the key to complete denture fabrication. An accurate impression of edentulous jaws must precisely reflect the anatomical shape and movement of the residual ridge and adjacent oral structures. Accurately increasing the border seal, retention, and comfort of the complete denture, as well as maintaining its stability during oral functional movements, is important. Numerous studies have shown that traditional impression methods are unable to meet the clinical requirements. Various modified impression methods, such as window tray, dynamic functional impression, frame cut back tray, and neutral zone techniques, etc., have continuously emerged in recent years. In the author’s opinion, the most suitable technique for taking impressions should be chosen based on the different residual alveolar ridge shapes, general conditions, or oral rehabilitation demands. This article reviews the various complete denture impression techniques and focuses on their corresponding technical key points and clinical applications.
