Abstract: Conventional tissue-engineering approaches have limited the progress of the field, while the tissue engineering has been considered to possess enormous potential. Cell sheet engineering using temperature-responsive culture dishes is applied in order to avoid the shortcomings of traditional tissue engineering. Cultured cells can be harvested as intact sheets by simple temperature changes of temperature-responsive dishes, thereby avoiding the use of proteolytic enzymes. Cell sheet engineering, therefore, is allowed for tissue regeneration by direct transplantation of cell sheets to host tissues or the creation of three-dimensional structures via the layering of individual cell sheets. Three-dimensional structures can also be created by wrapping scallfold with cell sheets. The cooperation of cell sheet engineering and traditional tissue engineering will promote the development of tissue engineering.

Key words: cell sheet, temperature-responsive culture dish, biodegradable scaffold
