Abstract:

Masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia (MMTAH) is a disease caused by the chronic progressive hyperplasia of masticatory tendons and aponeurosis and may be characterized by limited mouth opening, square mandible, and other manifestations. It usually starts at adolescence and slowly progresses. Patients have no obvious complaints, so detecting this condition is generally difficult. Since the related report in Japan in 2000, few reports and studies on this disease have been published in other countries. Clinically, surgical treatment is generally used with good effect. This article reviews the progress on the nomenclature, diagnosis, treatment, pathogenesis, and epidemiology of MMTAH in the past two decades.

Key words: masticatory muscle, tendon, aponeurosis, limited mouth opening, square mandible
