Abstract: Objective This study compares oral health-related quality of life among middle-aged and elderly individuals in southwest China by geriatric oral health assessment index(GOHAI) and oral health impact profile-14(OHIP-14) scales, to test the reliability of GOHAI and OHIP-14 scales, and to select the more effective scale in evaluating oral health-related quality of life of rural middle-aged and elderly individuals. Methods Surveys with OHIP-14 and GOHAI scales were conducted face-to-face among rural middle-aged and elderly individuals above 45 years old from Qingchuan Sichuan and Xishui Guizhou randomly. Differences between the two scales were compared by Paired sample t-test(P=0.05). Reliability was evaluated by Cronbach’s alpha. Results GOHAI and OHIP-14 scales were highly consistent in assessing oral health-related quality of life in the same subject. GOHAI and OHIP-14 scores of middle-aged and elderly people showed differences in each dimension except for the psychological dimension. Reliability analysis showed that OHIP-14 is inherently more stable and reliable. Conlusion OHIP-14 scale is more suitable for the evaluation of oral health quality of life among middle-aged and elderly individuals in rural southwest China.

Key words: middle-aged and elderly individuals, oral health-related quality of life, scale, rural population
