Abstract:
Titanium, with its excellent biocompatibility, high mechanical strength and good corrosion resistance, has been widely used in clinical and edentulous dentition defectrepair treatment. However, the high probability of assembling and adhering bacteria to its surface, together with the lack of antibacterial properties, makes it the main reason of inflammation around the implant denture and implant denture failure. Titanium surface antibacterial modification can alter the physical and chemical properties of the implant surface, inhibit bacteria adhesion and aggregation and improve the success rate of implant prosthesis. Surface modification of titanium implants, are mainly realized via adding antibacterial agent or substance with antibacterial properties to modify the titanium metal substrate surface by a certain carrier with antibacterial properties, such as hydroxyapatite coating, titanium oxide nanotubes and chitosan, to impart different levels of antibacterial properties. In this paper, the research of substrate, carrier and antimicrobial surface modification of titanium-based implant are reviewed.
