Structure, function, and control strategies of collagen and laminin-binding protein

Abstract:

Streptococcus mutans(S.mutans) is not only the most important bacteria associated with caries but is also closely related with infective endocarditis and atherosclerosis. The collagen and laminin-binding protein(Cnm) can bind collagen and laminin. Cnm’s 165 amino acids(from 152 to 316) are highly similar to the structural domain of collagenbinding protein. The Cnm in S.mutans has a high degree of homology with that in Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus.equi. Cnm plays an important role in binding to the extracellular matrix and host invasion. In addition, CnaB and CbpA may have similar functions. Researchers found that Cnm can be regarded not only as a biomarker for screening patients to determine whether prophylactic treatment needed but also as a target to control the infection of S.mutans. However, no effective drugs have been found to inhibit cnm or Cnm. Further study is needed. In conclusion, investigating Cnm is important forthe intervention of adhesion, aggregation, and biofilm formation of S.mutans, especially for preventing and treating caries and other systemic diseases, such as endocarditis.
