Abstract:

As one of the most ancient and widely used traditional Chinese herbal remedy, liquorice (root, rhizome and stolon of Glycyrrhiza species) shows definite curative effect on many diseases. Such effect has been further proved and confirmed by the research and practice of modern medicine and pharmacology. The major active components of liquorice are commonly identified as liquorice flavonoids, triterpene saponins and polysaccharides. These components are responsible for the phar-macological activities of this herbal remedy, e.g. anti-inflammation, anti-infection, anti-ulcer and antitumor effects. Licorice has numerous beneficial effects on oral infections and associated diseases, according to the results of previous studies. This paper reviews the application of liquorice and its extract to the prevention and treatment of dental caries, periodontitis, oral ulcers and candidiasis. Moreover, the medication safety of liquorice-related products is also discussed.

Key words: Glycyrrhiza, dental caries, Streptococcus mutans, periodontal disease, Candida albicans, recurrent aphthous ulcer
